How is licensing different than copyright?

Answer

Licensing is a method of granting permission for someone to use a work that is protected by copyright. Copyright is automatic and grants the creator exclusive rights. If the creator is willing to give up some of those rights to promote the use of his or her work, he or she can use a Creative Commons license to set the specific terms for that use.
