What are some alternatives for Flip?
Answer
As of July 1, 2024, Microsoft Flip (formerly Flipgrid) will no longer be available in mobile app stores, and the website (Flip.com) has officially gone into view-only mode. This also means that the Canvas - Flip integration will no longer be supported. According to the Flip FAQ website, while you will no longer be able to create new groups, topics or videos after this date, you will still have access to download your Flip videos through September 30, 2024.
While some of Flips core features have been integrated with Microsoft Teams for Education, we currently do not have the Microsoft Teams Canvas integration enabled.
4 Alternatives to Flip
Luckily, we have alternative tools available that promote group interaction and video creation. Here are four alternatives to using Flip for video discussions.
-
Panopto Video Assignments or Discussions in Canvas
- Students can easily record or upload videos and submit them for assignments or discussions using Panopto. Panopto can be accessed through an icon via the Canvas text entry box.
- Learn more about this option on the Video Assignments and Assessments page. This page can be found in the Panopto User Guide inside of Canvas.
- Don't have access to the Panopto User Guide? Reach out to your instructional design team at instructionaldesign@gulfcoast.edu to learn how you can gain access.
-
Canvas Discussions
- Using the "Insert Media" button in the text entry box, students can record or upload media directly to a Canvas discussion.
-
Padlet
- Padlet is another great option for video discussions. You can record and upload videos, share via link or QR code, and leave comments on each other's videos. A plus is that you can import your Flip videos right into Padlet. See how to import your Microsoft Flip videos into Padlet.

-
Screencastify Submit
- Screencastify is another great alternative for creating and sharing video assignments. It is a Chrome extension that allows you to record your screen, add narration, and easily share your videos. It's user friendly and works well with Canvas. A plus is that it is available for FREE for the entire 2024-25 school year!
