How do I use Panopto to submit a video assignment or a video discussion response in Canvas?

Answer

In some courses, your instructor(s) may ask you to submit assignments or discussion responses with a video recording. As a student, you have the ability to use Panopto to embed your recordings directly into your submissions. This guide will cover the most direct way to accomplish this task.

Navigate to an Assignment OR a Discussion

To submit your video with Panopto, navigate to the Canvas Assignment OR Discussion in your online course. If submitting to an assignment, select Start Assignment. If submitting to a discussion, select Reply.

Locate Panopto Video Icon

From the text entry box, locate the Panopto Video icon in the tool bar. From the pop-up menu, you will have options to Choose, Upload, or Record a video for your submission.

Choose a Video

Once you have selected the Panopto icon, a pop-up menu will appear. At the top of this menu, there will be a drop-down option that is prepopulated to pull from the assignments folder. You can verify that you are in the assignments folder by checking that [assignments] is included at the end of the folder name. If you have already recorded a video in Panopto, then you should see your video listed under the Choose option.

Upload a Video

You also have the option to upload a video that you've recorded using another tool or device.

Record a Video

Finally, you will also have an option to record a video directly to an assignment or discussion. On this tab, you will have options to record using Panopto Capture or from the downloadable application. Note that options for both Mac and Windows are available for download.
